Right now, three countries are hosting the same World Cup for the first time ever — USA, Mexico and Canada — and all three have started like a dream. But history keeps asking the same brutal question: is hosting the World Cup the greatest advantage in sport, or its cruellest trap?

Six host nations have been carried to the trophy by their own people. And others were buried in front of them — Brazil's Maracanazo in 1950, the day a nation cried; South Africa, the first host ever knocked out in the group stage; and Qatar 2022, the first host to lose all three games with zero points.
