When it was first announced that France had been chosen as the venue for the 1998 World Cup, nobody could have guessed that Jamaica would be fielding a team at the Finals, especially given the fact that the smaller nations in the CONCACAF group have to go through pre-qualifying games before even getting into a qualifying group.
There were three groups of four teams when the Semi-Final group matches were played, with Jamaica in Group 3.
From their first match in 1996 to the last qualifying match towards the end of 1997 there was disbelief from everybody but the most ardent Reggae Boyz fans. Then in the Semi-Final Round of qualification matches the Reggae Boyz’ results gave hope that something special was on the horizon.
Jamaica was top of the Semi-Final Group 3, qualifying for the Final CONCACAF group with Mexico. Then in the Final Round of qualifying matches they certainly exceeded all expectations with a string of outstanding results against nations with much greater resources: Jamaica had qualified from the CONCACAF group stages for the World Cup along with Mexico and the United States.
This is the audio story from two Reggae Boyz fans at the Finals in France and the adventure that was France ’98.
