Each year, the World Bank Group updates the classifications according to gross national income per capita estimates from the previous calendar year, placing the economies assessed into four income groups: low, lower-middle, upper-middle, and high. From the 218 economies analyzed for 2026-2027, six countries moved into a higher income category, and none moved down. Country income classifications help shape development policies, influence eligibility for concessional financing and official development assistance, and provide a framework for understanding economic progress.
